Visit to the Saga Area Tsunami Evacuation Tower
Learn from Japan’s largest tsunami evacuation towers.
Kuroshio Town, a town where the largest tsunami is expected to reach a height of 34 meters is predicted, has constructed six (6) tsunami evacuation towers. Among the tsunami evacuation towers that are allowed to be visited, the Saga Area Evacuation Tower is the tallest in Japan featuring barrier-free design with both stairs and ramps. Local residents with high sense of awareness to the importance of disaster preparedness and who engage in various disaster prevention activities on a daily basis, conduct not only the regular evacuation drills but inspect and add new equipment, will be the guide for Saga Tsunami Evacuation Tower and share the thoughts and efforts of the townspeople who are working to achieve the goal of "zero victims”.

Program Flow
- Tour of the TowerIntroduction of the functions of Kuroshio Town’s tsunami evacuation towers, the Saga Area Tsunami Evacuation Tower’s living quarters, and equipment prepared by local residents. In addition, the method of daily life rooted in disaster prevention of the local voluntary disaster prevention organization which received the Kochi Prefecture Governor’s Commendation for Voluntary Disaster Prevention Organizations in 2017 will be discussed using actual examples.
- OptionPractice how to evacuate from places such as Shioya Beach in Saga Area to tsunami evacuation site, which route to take, how fast to evacuate, etc. by using smartphone tsunami evacuation training support application “Escape Training” (supervised by Yamori Laboratory, Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute).
